Types of grab bars

With the right grab bars, users can use the washroom safely and independently. All grab bars in this category are from MediQo-line and made of stainless steel, a material that is sturdy and stands up well to frequent cleaning. They are part of our range in Sanitary & washroom fittings. Which bar you need depends on the location and the function.

Straight grab bars

The straight grab bar is the most widely used type. MediQo-line supplies it in lengths of 387, 455, 610 and 760 mm, for mounting next to the toilet, at the washbasin or in the shower. A shorter bar offers support at a fixed point, a longer one gives a wider gripping zone.

Angled grab bars

An angled bar provides support in two directions, for example to stand up while keeping your balance. You can choose from a grab bar with a 90° angle to the left or to the right, an angled bar with a 130° angle and a classic corner grab bar.

Wall grab bars, left and right

The wall grab bars are available in a left-hand and a right-hand version, matched to the side where the user needs support. That way the bar suits the layout of the toilet in your washroom.

Wall-to-floor bars

A wall-to-floor bar is fixed to both the wall and the floor and therefore offers extra stability. MediQo-line offers versions with an extra rail, left or right, and a built-in version. They are useful when the wall alone does not have enough load-bearing capacity.

Swing up bar

The swing up bar is a fold-up grab bar. When lowered it provides support next to the toilet, when raised it frees up the space, for example for a sideways transfer from a wheelchair.

Who are they for, and where?

Grab bars are indispensable in care facilities, hospitals, residential care homes and assisted living flats. In accessible toilets in offices, hospitality, schools, sports halls and public buildings, they are also part of an accessible fit-out. They help not only wheelchair users, but also older people, people recovering from surgery and anyone who could use a little extra support. In showers they provide a firm hold on a wet, slippery floor. Also take a look at the other products in Sanitary & washroom fittings to complete your accessible toilet.

What to look for

  • Position of the toilet: determine whether you need a left-hand or right-hand version, depending on the free side next to the toilet.
  • Load-bearing capacity of the wall: a grab bar must be firmly anchored. On a lightweight wall, a wall-to-floor bar provides extra support.
  • Free space: choose a fold-up swing up bar when a wheelchair needs to be able to get next to the toilet.
  • Length and shape: match the length of a straight bar or the angle of an angled bar to the movement the user makes.
  • Regulations: for accessible toilets, follow the applicable guidelines for positioning and height.

Frequently asked questions

Which length of straight grab bar should I choose?

That depends on the function. A shorter bar is sufficient at a washbasin, for example, while a longer one offers a larger gripping zone next to the toilet or in the shower.

What is the advantage of a swing up bar?

A fold-up bar provides support when lowered and frees up space when you raise it, for example for a sideways transfer from a wheelchair.

Can I mount a grab bar on any wall?

A grab bar must be able to take a large part of a person's body weight. So mount it on a sturdy wall with suitable fixings. If you are unsure about the load-bearing capacity, choose a wall-to-floor bar or ask for advice.
